Swiss Singers start new year, move rehearsal site

The Columbus Swiss Singers took a winter break, reconvening March 8 at their new rehearsal site, the fellowship hall at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 225 East Gates Street (map).

Because of a scheduling conflict at the site, the chorus will not rehearse on the first Wednesday of the month until further notice; however, rehearsals will be held on the other Wednesdays at 7:30 pm. New singers are always welcome!

Helvetia and Edelweiss merge to form Schweizerchor Columbus

Last winter, following the retirement of our longtime director John Long, the two organizations forming the Columbus Swiss Singers decided to merge into a single organization. This was done to make better use of financial and leadership resources.

The first action taken by the new organization was to approve the contract for our new (but very familiar) director, Matt Ebright, whose creative direction has already envigorated the chorus.

The two groups finalized the merger on the adoption of a constitution April 20, 2016. The first officers of the new organization were elected June 1. They are:

President: Pat Hoffman

Vice President – Membership: Karen Stewart

Vice President – Public Relations: Kathy Megown

Secretary: Beth Bradley

Treasurer: Harold Thomas

They will serve through December 2017, after which officers will be elected to annual terms.

Dec. 18 Christmas Concert to benefit Southside food pantry

Version 2
Annual Christmas Concert

With  the Germania Singing Society  —  the Mendelssohn Liedertafel  —  the Columbus Swiss Singers  –

and  the Alphorn Gruezie
Sunday,  December 18,  2016, at 4:00 PM

St. Paul United Church of Christ,  225 East Gates St.,  Columbus,  43206

A free-will offering supports the Food Pantry located at St. Paul’s.

This concert will be presented by three choruses, each of which brought its own unique musical contribution.   Then, the choruses united for some final selections, and the choruses were joined by the Alphorn Gruezie,  a group of Swiss Alphorn Players. The alphorns add a rich, mellow tone that resonates beautifully within the church.
In the spirit of giving, the concert was a fundraiser for the Southside Community Ministries (SSCM)  Food Pantry, located at St. Paul’s UCC Church, which helps over 1,000 area family members every month.
Food donations were “leveraged,”  so that $1 of donation can purchase about $8 worth of food from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
The singers and participants of the concert are committed to sharing their music and Christmas spirit,  and to supporting the Southside Food Pantry at St. Paul’s.

Columbus Swiss Singers in New Glarus, 2009

The Columbus Swiss Singers held a free concert as it completed preparations for the 41st North American Swiss Sängerfest, held in June,  in New Glarus,  Wisconsin.

The singers were rehearsing and preparing to represent Columbus  at this international event.
This concert showcased some of the music from the 2015 Sängerfest,  as well as the “Competition Selection” (also known as the “Prize Song”) of the Columbus Swiss Singers.  Each group sings (or yodels) a musical number, and then are judged on a scale of 0-100, with gold, silver, and bronze ribbons being awarded to the best choruses.
The event was held at St. Leo’s Catholic Church,  a grand old church in the Merion Village area.   The church has quite a history in Columbus and  has the most wonderful acoustics for musical event.
A free-will offering was taken to benefit the St. Leo’s Preservation Society.
